Silence is Golden

I am typically a quiet person. I am an extrovert, so I like being in conversations with groups of people. But, I generally steer clear of controversial or sexual statements. As a result, people believe that I just cannot think in such “low brow” terms.

However, once in a while, I surprise myself and others with the kinds of things that come out of my mouth. I have a knack for picking just the wrong thing to say at just the right time.

My brother, who shall remain nameless, used to have the same habit as Michael Scott, the cringe-inducing boss from the TV show “The Office” (my brother probably learned this behavior from watching that show). My brother would listen to the normal every-day things people say and, if it could be turned into some sort of sexual statement, he would append “That’s what she said” immediately after that person’s statement.

One Sunday, my brothers and sister were at my apartment having dinner. My brother (the nameless one) received a phone call but missed it. A little while later when he noticed the missed call, he called his friend back, explaining, “Sorry I missed your call. It was on vibrate and I was nowhere near when it went off.” And I quipped “That’s what she said!”

Yikes! Where did that come from? I turned bright red. My sister doubled over and just about bust her gut. She had to temporarily flee the room.

On the bright side, I think this was good for my nameless brother: he hasn’t used that phrase nearly as often as he used to.

  1. You've given me a new mission. I'm now inspired to say things to which you might be able to respond with "That's what she said!"

    Ha ha ha... ;)
