Some of you may recall an 80s TV show of that name, and I just want to say that has nothing to do with the topic of this blog. Ah, Gary Coleman at his finest, may he rest in peace…
In a recent discussion, a friend revealed that his father had suffered a stroke at a surprisingly young age. Despite a small loss of motor control, his father could still get around well.
His wife mentioned, “I know other people who have had strokes and they are much worse off. It’s kind of strange that his father would fare so much better.”
Without thinking, I quipped, “Different strokes for different folks!”
The room fell silent.
Time slowed.
My face burned.
Oops! To say that was a bad (if witty) choice of words is a gross understatement. I regretted the insensitive expression even as I uttered it, but I was powerless to stop!
Thankfully, my friend was not visibly offended; he tried to smooth over my mortification with a chuckle and told me it was alright. Sometimes, I just wish I thought about things I say BEFORE they come rushing out with all the finesse of a demolition derby.
As an aside, noted writer Orson Scott Card had a stroke at the beginning of the year and it only mildly affected his speech and typing ability.
AWESOME!
