Midnight Madness

Lately, my wife and I have been borrowing a truck while we move many of our belongings to a storage unit. Our garage is still full of stuff so we cannot park either of our cars in it and we normally park both of our cars in the driveway. However, for the safety of our friend’s truck, we park it in the driveway with my wife’s car, and I park my car on a nearby street.

I stopped for some food and supplies on my way home. To save some time bringing in those items I parked my car in front of my house. I reminded myself that I needed to move the car after taking the trash out to the street.

After a nice dinner, I took out the garbage, came back in, and my wife and I decided to retire early. She got a nice 2-hour nap while I just lay in bed unable to sleep.

An hour or two after she got up we decided to go to bed for the night. As we lay in bed starting to doze off, she heard something downstairs and wondered if the front door was locked. I was pretty sure it was, but I decided to check anyway. I looked out the bathroom window and noticed the trees blowing in the wind, so I figured that must be the noises she heard, but I continued down the stairs.

Halfway down the stairs I heard some clanking and snapping.

“CRAP!”

“What is it?”

“My car’s being towed!” as I raced down the stairs and bolted out the front door.

“Sorry dude! It’s already on the truck. It’ll cost you $70 to get it off now or $140 in the morning.”

Bleh! I have to pay $70 to get my own car back from in front of my own house from some teenager and his girlfriend?

Grumble grumble grumble…

So I pony up the cash, and the guy and his girlfriend release my car and then head off.

While they were waiting for me I noticed someone down the street come out of their house, get into their car which is also parked on the street and drive it somewhere else. Serves these two right that they only get a quarter of what they could have gotten.

As they are driving away my wife notices that they left their wireless break lights on the back of my car. I try to flag them down but it’s too late.

Rather than try and keep them, I just put them on the curb next to the fire hydrant. They can come find these later, if the sprinklers don’t get to them first…

  1. I would have sold them back to them for $70. "To late dude they're already in my hands. It's $70 today and $140 tomorrow." :)
